E. Don Brown’s First Leadership Lesson

It is never a bad time to revisit the leadership lessons of E. Don Brown (Principal Emeritus: NASSP; TASSP; LYS). Here is one of the lessons that is at the top of his list.

A School Leader Does Not Have The Luxury Of Having A Sense of Humor.

This lesson recognizes that when using humor, there is someone, something, or some event that is the butt of the joke.

When everyone else is laughing, the butt of the joke is hurt. The job of school leader is too important to risk alienating the people you need. The people who do the hard work of either teaching students or making the school run.

Leave the funny to professional comedians. You stick with being a professional educator and leader.

Think. Work. Achieve.
