NOTE: I know that the 2018/2019 school year is now over.  I’m posting this now so you can set up the practice for the 2019/2020 school year.

A LYS Principal asks the following:

We’re about to do them, but I thought we should check in first. Should we continue with our 3-week Checkpoints after STAAR testing? 

SC Response

Great question.  The answer is a qualified “Yes.”  There are a couple of variables.

With non-STAAR tested courses, the three week checkpoint continue un interrupted and culminate with a cumulative final that all students take.  Do not exempt students from the final in a non-STAAR tested course.  You need the end of the year data.

For STAAR tested courses, just continue with checkpoints and you can skip the final (or at least have final exemptions). There is no need for the end of the year finals data… Because you will have the STAAR data.

The big question is usually, “Why?”

Pure pragmatism. By continuing the checkpoint process after the STAAR test teachers and kids keep moving forward until the last day of school.  Otherwise, everyone shuts down when the last STAAR test is completed.
