Recently I was speaking to a group of new Principals that wanted to avoid making any mistakes that would get them fired.
Note: Experienced principals generally don’t have this fear. They are usually at the point in their career where they think, “Go ahead and fire me, I could use the vacation.”
So, I shared with them the advice my boss (Bob Brezina) gave me when I was a new principal and had the same concerns.
“If you make a mistake ‘doing’ something, we can almost always recover from it. I hired you to make decisions and act. I hired you to lead.”
“If you have a chance to do something and don’t, that is an entirely different situation. You weren’t hired to watch and report. Anybody can do that.”
Think. Work. Achieve.
