Teacher inservice season is right around the corner, if it hasn’t already begun in your district. The next three posts are quick hitters on how to ensure that all the training you do is a complete waste of time. Which I’m assuming must be the intent at most campuses because we see these mistakes over and over again.

You can easily set the training up to fail by using any variation of the following introduction, “I know we already do this, but…”

It doesn’t matter what you say after, “but.”

What you have communicated is, “There is no reason to pay attention to the information or attempt to do this during the school year, because we already do this. We have arrived. Just kill some time, work on your seating chart and try not to fall asleep.”

If you recognize that you often say this, here is my advice. Say, “We may be aware of this. This year we’re going to move from awareness to purposeful implementation.”

Or, if that is too uncomfortable, say nothing. Skip the introduction and just start the training.
